2020 Season Preview

Down Low (106-132): Four double-digit winning starters return in the lowerweights. Junior Jose Becerril, is entering his 3rd season as a starter. He's won 17 matches in each of his first two seasons, and is looking to take the next step forward this year. Senior Yenfry Sanchez is ready for year four as a starter for the Piners. In addition to bringing veteran leadership to the group, he will also be looking for a breakout year in his final run. Sophomore Rasul Allen and junior Miguel Mendoza are the other two returning starters, and give Lakewood a nice experienced base to break in some newcomers around, including promising frosh Edgar Silva and Ezekiel Hernandez.

In The Middle (138-160): Gustavo Limon and Rene Garcia are two more wrestlers entering the third year as starters for the Piners. Limon showed great improvement from his frosh to sophomore years, going from 11 wins to 21 wins. He advanced to the Regions last season as an injury replacement after finisihing 4th at Districts. Junior Mauricio Rodriguez is the third returning starter in the middleweights, and Alex Vilchis, another junior, saw 13 matches in the lineup last season. Good experience, as well as several newcomers looking to contribute as well, makes for a nice combo here for Lakewood in what should be a good stretch of middleweights.

Up Top (170-Hwt): After missing the 2018 season, Kevin Rybakowski returned last year and had a solid campaign, racking up 27 wins. He is a wrestler to watch, as he is the ability to be one of the Shore's best heavyweights. Rybakowski is working hard in the room with junior 220-pounder Angel Gonzalez, who himself had a solid 2019, recording 23 victories. The two of them give the Piners a very strong 1-2 punch in the 220/Hwt slots. Junior Gustavo Saavedra won 11 matches in 2019, and is yet another Piner looking to take it to the next level this season. If he hits that 20+ win mark, it gives Lakewood one of the better trios at 195-Hwt in the Shore Conference.

The Piners are coming off a 19-win dual season in which they wrestled a ton of sophomores. That group is a year older, a year more mature, and year wiser, giving them some great experience all over the lineup. There is also a strong number of underclassmen banging on the door to get in the lineup, creating a competitive atmosphere in the room that is only going to make this team stronger. With what they have back, and the hard work they put in during a successful off-season, the Piners have the potential to have one of the best, and deepest, lineups that they have had in quite some time.
